So, how where did the sock monkey come from? Back in the early 1800′s a stuffed animal craze hit the European countryside and inevitably made its way to America where it weaved its way into the arts and crafts movement in the US. Moms were always looking for inexpensive ways to entertain their kids and for cheap toys for their children to play with. So, women began sewing sock monkeys as toys for their kids. It was a perfect invention and could be made from materials already at home. Every woman had needle and thread in those times as sewing ones own clothes was as common as buying clothes at the store. And, socks are notorious for loosing their mates, so what do you do with a lonely sock, make a sock monkey.
Rockford, Illinois is considered the home of the Sock Monkey and since the year 2005, these stuffed animal toys have gained popularity. You’ll see them more and more in commercials, movies and on television.
